WORLD VEGAN DAY

The World Vegan Day is about raising awareness of the treatment of animals, the ethical issue of mass livestock, and the environmental effects of having livestock. This day also promotes the benefits of a vegan diet and veganism in general. The practice of not eating meat can be traced back to eastern Mediterranean and ancient Indian cultures. But the first time vegetarianism is recorded is by Pythagoras of Samos – the great Greek mathematician.

Many followers of Buddhism are also promoters of vegetarianism as they do not want to inflict harm on other animals. World Vegan Day was started by the Vegan Society, a group that was created by Donald Watson, who was an English animal rights advocate.

  • 1847 - First vegetarian society is formed. Begun in England, this group started meeting and 150 members were enrolled in a short period of time.

  • The Vegan Society was established in November of 1944.

  • In a 2018 Gallup poll from the US, 5% of American adults identified as vegetarian, and 2% as vegan.

  • In an effort to help more people embrace the vegan lifestyle, Vegan Society launches the first ever vegan App, VeGuide, to help folks on their journey.

In recent years plant-based meats became very popular and companies like Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods make their way with burgers without meat. Worldwide, the total consumption of such meat substitutes has grown from 133 million kilograms in 2013 to 470 million kilograms in 2020. Fewer animal products mean fewer greenhouse gasses, which means better earth for everyone.
