In partnership with the Brazilian government, Protecting Our Planet Challenge, which launched in 2021, announced a $200 million dollar investment which will serve to support the expansion of protected areas and Indigenous territories in the Amazon Rainforest through 2027, making it possible for Brazil to achieve its zero deforestation goal and transition to more sustainable economies.
Supporting this initiative includes Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re:wild, Jeff Bezos’ Earth Fund (a $10 billion dollar commitment to drive climate and nature solutions), and Rainforest Trust. Additional donors and partners are invited to join in the efforts to safeguard one of the most biodiverse places on earth.
About Protecting Our Planet Challenge
Protecting Our Planet Challenge is the largest private funding coalition supporting biodiversity conservation. This commitment, which consists of eleven organizations and a $5 billion pledge, is working to protect and conserve 30% of Earth’s wild places by 2030 so as to ensure the sustainability of the planet — for all. They are doing so by:
- Establishing, managing and monitoring protected and conserved areas of land and water.
- Prioritizing work with Indigenous peoples, local communities, and local and federval governments.
With nearly 17% of the Amazon already gone, commitments like this are vital to safeguarding the planet.
