It’s a victory for vaquitas! Get the details about the expansion of protected ocean territory announced by Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Government of Mexico.
Vaquita dolphins are the most critically endangered marine animal in the world — with only 10 remaining, these porpoises swim on the brink of extinction everyday. Common victims of bycatch from totoaba fishing that occurs in the vaquita’s habitat, their future was looking grim. But in early October, the vaquita finally received some good news. In a joint effort with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society the Mexican government has increased the area of protected territory for vaquita dolphins and totoaba in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California).
