Thousands of hectares of tropical forests are destroyed every year for palm oil, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia. This is where more than 85% of the world's production comes from. Although this is a problem thousands of kilometres away, we are part of it. The Czech Republic consumes around 30 000 tonnes of palm oil annually. The impact is also felt by the local population - loss of land, conflicts with companies and corruption make nature conservation much more difficult. The solution is not only to find substitute oils, but above all to reduce consumption and promote sustainable management and education of local communities.
This is what our guest Stanislav Lhota is trying to do. Stanislav is a researcher at the Czech University of Agriculture and the Ústí ZOO. Since 2005 he has been working mainly in Indonesia. He is the coordinator and expert guarantor of the movement to save the Balikpapan bay Zátoka nosatých opic. He also advocates for action on the adverse impact of unsustainable palm oil production. He oversees numerous projects interested in captive primate care, reintroduction and especially research in the wild.
Fundraiser: Palm Oil Free
Symbolically, on 1 February we are launching the fundraiser "Palm Oil Free". 100% of the donations raised will go to orangutan conservation through the organization Orangutan Outreach and the Education4Conservation projects of Stanislav Lhota and Green Books, which have been helping to protect nature in Indonesia for a long time.
