Restoring, Protecting & Conserving Raja Ampat’s Coral Reefs

The SEA People is a non-profit organization dedicated to community-based marine conservation in Raja Ampat. Since its early efforts, it has gained international recognition for impactful projects such as the Yaf Keru Reef Restoration, through which over 1.5 hectares of degraded reef have been restored.
Yaf Keru Reef Restoration Project

The project focuses on rehabilitating degraded coral reefs and preserving healthy ones, aiming to restore up to 5 hectares of reef over several years.
Key Achievements
- Coral Transplantation: Over 65,000 coral fragments have been transplanted, contributing to the restoration of more than 1.5 hectares of degraded reef.
- Community Engagement: The project has trained and employed over 30 local community members as "Coral Gardeners," providing alternative livelihoods and empowering them to actively protect their natural resources.
- Monitoring and Education: Through 671 dives, including 81 monitoring dives, the project has enhanced reef health and served as an educational platform for locals and visitors.
Future Goals
The project aims to restore an additional 3.5 hectares of degraded reef and protect an equivalent area of healthy reef within the next few years. This expansion will involve the installation of more artificial reef structures and the continued employment of local community members.
Local Community

The organization has also trained and employed 30 local community members as scuba divers, supporting alternative livelihoods and empowering locals to protect marine ecosystems. Using innovative technology and a holistic, ecosystem-based approach, The SEA People contributes to global conservation goals and works to ensure the long-term health of Raja Ampat’s reefs.
