Fundraiser: The Boat That Protects Raja Ampat’s Corals

Help for the Galaxea boat - the heart of Raja Ampat's coral conservationists

Organisation The SEA People, which operates in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, has recently found itself in a very difficult situation. Their ship Galaxea, an essential tool for field work, suffered a serious breakdown when her rudder broke off during a stormy night.

The crew responded promptly and professionally, and above all ensured the safety of all on board. Nevertheless, this accident brought major financial and organisational complications. In an area as remote as Raja Ampat, such repairs are difficult and expensive to deal with. The damaged parts and the ship itself had to be transported to the mainland in Sorong. There, other expenses were added: mooring fees, fuel, mandatory clearance fees at the port and salaries for the team that cannot work in the field during the repairs.

The total cost of the entire accident has climbed to an estimated EUR 5,500-6,000. However, apart from the money, the repairs have another painful cost: during the time Galaxea was unable to set sail, it was not possible to restore about 900 m² of coral reef - through 2700 new coral fragments - and several volunteer programs had to be cancelled.

That's why a fundraiser is now underway to finance a specific part of the repairs - new rudder whose price came out to EUR 2,000.

Why does it matter?

Galaxea is more than just a ship to The SEA People. It is their base, a working tool and a means to protect and restore Raja Ampat's unique reefs and engage volunteers from around the world in ocean conservation. Every day that the boat cannot sail means not only lost time, but also irreparable damage to the local ecosystem.
