Endangered Species in Raja Ampat

Amazing creatures of the last paradise

There are few publicly accessible lists of protected species in Raja Ampat and Indonesia. The SEA People have compiled a list based on current legal frameworks from Raja Ampat Regency and the Republic of Indonesia, as well as IUCN conservation statuses. The list includes species known to inhabit Raja Ampat at the time of writing but may not be exhaustive.

Endangered Species – IUCN Red List Status

Marine Mammals

Raja Ampat is home to a variety of marine mammals, including dolphins, whales, and dugongs. While some species are protected by Indonesian law, many face threats from habitat disturbance, pollution, and boat traffic.

Sea Turtles

Six of the world’s seven sea turtle species are found in Raja Ampat. These turtles are protected under Indonesian law and are listed as endangered or critically endangered by the IUCN, primarily due to poaching, habitat loss, and plastic pollution.

Sharks & Rays

Raja Ampat hosts a high diversity of sharks and rays, including several endemic and endangered species. Despite legal protection in the region, these animals are still threatened by illegal fishing and habitat degradation. Typical examples are the Giant Oceanic Manta, Reef Manta and Zebra Shark.

Fish

Certain iconic reef fish, such as the Napoleon wrasse, are endangered due to overfishing and illegal trade. Raja Ampat's reefs provide vital habitat for these species, making their protection a regional priority.

Invertebrates

Notable invertebrates like the giant clam and rare mantis shrimp species are found here. Many are protected due to their ecological importance and vulnerability to collection and reef damage.

Endemic Species

  • Raja Ampat Epaulette Shark
  • 8 endemic species mantis shrimp
  • Wilson’s Bird of Paradise
  • Red Bird of Paradise
  • Waigeo Cuscus
